Hammer + Awl

I’ve found that getting out of the downtown Seattle shopping core is the key to finding stores that carry unexpected brands. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of stores downtown to find great menswear, but sometimes I want styles from brands that some of the major stores just don’t carry. To do that, I have to go to boutiques like Hammer + Awl in Seattle’s Madrona neighborhood. It is unexpected gems like this, tucked away in small neighborhoods, that get me excited about shopping. A small boutique completely dedicated to menswear, with carefully selected pieces from the likes of Taylor Stitch, RAINS, Fine & Dandy and Giles & Brother, it’s easily one of my favorite places to shop and so worth the detour.

With all of the rainfall here in Seattle, rain gear is a necessity. However, the perennial problem we Pacific Northwesterners have is finding waterproof apparel that’s simultaneously functional and stylish. Hammer + Awl has the answer. They carry RAINS, a popular Danish brand that designs modern rain jackets. At the $120 price point, this jacket is a great alternative to the trendy Stutterheim Stockholm at $295. It’s lightweight and breathable, so you won’t overheat when wearing it on warmer, rainy days. Hammer + Awl also carries their matching, water-resistant bags which will give you one hell of a stylish commute! Shop owner Erin Krohn clearly had the Seattle gentleman in mind when deciding on a brand like RAINS to carry in her store.

For this look, I’m wearing an indigo denim utility shirt designed by Tailor Stitch, another brand with well-designed products that are built for the urbane man. It’s designed with a work wear aesthetic in mind, but versatile enough to be tucked-in and worn as a casual dress shirt. The unique texture and comfort of this shirt is so good!

Lastly, when it comes to accessories, Hammer + Awl has a selection of neckerchiefs, wallets, watches and jewelry that do not disappoint. For example, this Giles & Brother bracelet I’m wearing is one that you’ll be hard-pressed to find at other menswear stores in town. Just one more reason why you should have Hammer + Awl on your radar this spring!

Cheers,

Curtis

  2. Great store! I’d love to get some recommendations from you for my twin 21 year olds! Tall, long legged, and thin.
